Passing target: 70% (21/30)
You are following a school bus with children on board toward a railroad crossing. The crossing lights are not flashing, and no train is in sight. What should you expect the bus to do?
A follows school bus B toward a railroad crossing. B is longer than the car, the crossing lamps are dark, and no train is visible.
Correct answer: Stop at least 15 feet from the tracks before crossing.
Why
In New Mexico, school buses carrying children, vehicles carrying passengers for hire, and trucks carrying explosives, gasoline or other hazardous materials must stop 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail before crossing, even when no train is coming. The manual adds that a school bus driver opens the door before crossing to look and listen. When you follow one of these vehicles, keep extra space and be ready to stop behind it.
