Traffic Signals & Road MarkingsStandalone practice
Your traffic light is green. As you near the intersection, a police officer who stands in it faces you and holds up one hand with the palm toward you. What should you do?
A traffic light shows green beside a police officer facing the driver with one hand raised, palm forward.
Correct answer: Stop and wait until the officer signals you to go.
Why
Officers direct traffic when signals alone cannot keep it moving safely. You must obey them even when their direction is the opposite of the light: stop at a green if told to stop, and go through a red light or a STOP sign if waved on. In New York, fire police, school crossing guards, work-area flag persons and school bus drivers can also direct traffic.
