A power failure has left the traffic lights dark at a four-way intersection. No police officer is directing traffic. What must you do?
A and B approach a four-way intersection where every traffic light is dark. No officer is present.
Correct answer: Stop as for a STOP sign, then go by the right-of-way rules when it is safe
Why
The same rule applies to a signal that does not work correctly, for example one that seems stuck. After you stop, yield to vehicles already in the intersection or close enough to be a hazard; when drivers at right angles stop at the same time, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. If a police officer directs traffic, follow the officer instead.
