At a crossroads with no signs or signals, Maria drives north and Tom drives west on the cross road. They reach the intersection at the same moment, and both plan to go straight. Maria goes first, and Tom has to brake hard. Which statement is correct?
At an uncontrolled crossroads, Maria’s blue car A has entered northbound and Tom’s silver car B approaches westbound from the right. The cards state that they arrived together and Tom braked hard.
Correct answer: Maria failed to yield, because Tom came toward the intersection from her right
Why
To use the rule, look at the intersection from each driver's seat: the driver who has the other car on the right must yield. First check for a vehicle that is already in the intersection, because it goes first. The same rule applies when two drivers at right angles stop at STOP signs at the same time. Even when you have the right-of-way, be ready to stop, because the other driver may not yield.
