A friend plans to ride a bicycle on a two-lane road that has no bicycle lane. Which advice about the direction of travel agrees with North Carolina law and the handbook?
The road has one lane each way and no bicycle lane. Blue A travels right in the near lane, and silver C approaches from the opposite direction. The friend’s bicycle is not yet placed on the road.
Correct answer: Ride on the right side, in the same direction as traffic, because a bicycle is a vehicle.
Why
Drivers who pull out or turn usually look toward traffic that comes from the normal direction, so they can miss a bicyclist who comes the wrong way. When a bicycle goes with traffic, drivers behind it can see it early and pass it with care. As a driver, expect bicycles in the roadway: a bicyclist may use a bicycle lane, a paved shoulder or the full travel lane when road conditions require it.
