At an intersection with no traffic signals, a pedestrian at the corner holds a white cane out in front at arm's length and starts to cross the street in front of you. What does North Carolina law require you to do?
At an intersection without traffic signals, A approaches a marked crosswalk as B starts to cross from the right-hand corner. B holds a white cane forward at arm’s length, shown clearly in an enlarged detail.
Correct answer: Stop fully and stay stopped until the person has finished crossing
Why
A person who cannot see your car depends on quiet, stopped traffic to cross safely. At a crossing with traffic signals, the special right-of-way applies when the person is partly across as the signal changes; then all vehicles must stop and stay stopped until the person has crossed. In North Carolina, a failure to yield to a blind pedestrian is a Class 2 misdemeanor.
