Your light turns green, but traffic on the far side of the intersection is backed up. If you enter now, your car will have to stop in the intersection or in the far crosswalk. What should you do?
A faces green before an intersection with marked crosswalks on all four sides. Cars B and C are stopped just beyond the far crossing, leaving too little room for A to clear it.
Correct answer: Wait behind the stop line until there is room for your car on the far side
Why
A car that is stuck in the middle of an intersection blocks cross traffic, emergency vehicles and people in the crosswalk, and it can lock up traffic in every direction. In North Carolina the same rule applies to intersections, marked crosswalks and railroad crossings. At a railroad crossing, also make sure that the traffic ahead cannot stop and leave you on the tracks.
