You are driving on a two-lane city street. An ambulance with flashing lights and a siren comes up behind you. No officer is directing traffic. What does North Carolina law require you to do?
A travels on a two-lane city street with an ambulance B behind it. B’s warning lamps are lit, and the card states that its lights flash and its siren sounds; the visible street segment has curbs and no intersection.
Correct answer: Drive as near as you can to the right-hand curb, clear of any intersection, and stop until it passes.
Why
This rule applies whether the emergency vehicle comes from ahead or from behind. Stay stopped until it has passed or an officer tells you to move, and check for a second emergency vehicle before you pull back into traffic. On a four-lane limited-access highway with a median, drivers going the opposite direction do not have to stop.
