Weather, Visibility & EmergenciesStandalone practice
You press the brake pedal of your car, which has an automatic transmission, as you approach stopped traffic. The pedal sinks to the floor and the car barely slows. What should you do?
Correct answer: Apply the parking or emergency brake and move the gear lever into a low range.
Why
The handbook admits that this method can damage the emergency brake and the transmission, but after a brake failure there is no better choice. In a car with a manual transmission, shift to a lower gear, release the clutch and apply the emergency brake. Once the car slows, steer it to a safe place off the road.
