At night on a two-lane road, a deer suddenly steps into your lane ahead. A car is coming in the other lane, and there is a ditch on your right. What should you do?
At night, a deer steps into A’s lane ahead. B approaches in the opposite lane. A recessed ditch with sloping banks runs beside the right shoulder; an inset enlarges the deer.
Correct answer: Brake firmly and stay in your lane, and sound your horn briefly if you have time.
Why
Swerving to miss an animal can put you into oncoming traffic, a ditch or a tree, which can be worse than hitting the animal. Wildlife is most active at dawn, at dusk and in the first hours after dark. If you hit an animal, pull off the road safely, stay in your car with the hazard lights on, and do not approach the animal.
