Passing target: 80% (24/30)
After a heavy storm, fast-moving water flows across a low spot in the road ahead. It looks only about six inches deep, and a pickup truck just drove through it. What should you do?
A approaches fast-moving water across both lanes at a low spot in the road after a storm. White flow arrows mark the current, and silver pickup B is already on dry road beyond it; the card says the water looks about six inches deep, not that its depth is known.
Correct answer: Turn around, because the water may be much deeper than it looks
Why
Since 1970, inland flooding has caused 85 percent of the deaths linked to tropical weather in North Carolina, and half of those deaths came from driving into known flooded roads. Water hides the road surface, and the road under it may be gone. Be extra careful whenever water moves across a road during or after heavy rain.
