You find an open curb space in a town that has no local rule about hydrant distance. If you park there, your front bumper will be 12 feet from a fire hydrant. May you park in this space?
A is shown in a proposed curb space with its front bumper 12 feet from a fire hydrant. The curb is unpainted, and the card states that no local rule changes the distance.
Correct answer: No. State law requires you to park at least 15 feet from a fire hydrant.
Why
Firefighters need space to connect hoses to a hydrant and to put their trucks in position quickly. G.S. 20-162 prohibits parking within 15 feet of a hydrant or of a fire station entrance in either direction, whether or not you stay in the car. A town may set a shorter hydrant distance by local ordinance, but where no local rule applies, 15 feet is the state rule.
