You are first in line at a red light. The light turns green, but a pedestrian who started across on the WALK signal is still in the crosswalk in front of your car. The DON'T WALK signal now shows. What should you do?
A is first at the stop line with a green vehicle signal. B remains in the crosswalk after starting on WALK, while the separate pedestrian signal now displays the orange raised hand for DON’T WALK.
Correct answer: Wait until the pedestrian has safely finished crossing, then go
Why
Older people, children and people with disabilities may need more time than the signal gives. In North Carolina, a pedestrian who started on WALK may continue to the sidewalk or a safety island while DON'T WALK shows. A green light lets you go only with due care and subject to the rights of pedestrians. When you turn on a green light, also check the crosswalk on your turn path, because pedestrians who cross with a green signal have the right-of-way.
