Passing target: 80% (24/30)
At night on a narrow road with no shoulder, a patrol car with blue lights flashing pulls up behind you. There is no safe place to stop right away. What does the North Carolina handbook advise?
At night, blue car A travels on a narrow two-lane road with no shoulder beside it. Police vehicle B follows with a flashing blue lamp, and a paved pull-off is visible farther ahead on the right.
Correct answer: Turn on your hazard flashers, slow down by about 10 mph, and drive on to the nearest safe place to stop.
Why
When you stop, stay in the vehicle, turn on the interior light at night, and keep your hands where the officer can see them, such as on the steering wheel. Do not reach under the seats or into the glove box unless the officer asks you to. If you truly doubt that an unmarked car is a police car, you may call 9-1-1 to confirm before you stop.
