You normally keep a two-second following distance. Heavy rain starts, and the pavement becomes slippery. What following distance should you keep now?
Blue car A follows silver car B on a wet two-lane road during heavy rain. A roadside sign back provides a fixed reference point, and the question card states the normal two-second gap and slippery conditions without giving the new gap.
Correct answer: At least four seconds, twice your normal following distance
Why
The first 10 to 15 minutes of rain are the most slippery, because the rain mixes with oil, dust and rubber on the road. Drive at least 5 to 10 mph slower than on dry pavement, and never use cruise control in the rain. North Carolina law also requires your headlights to be on when you use your wipers because of the weather.
