Your car runs well, but you must leave it on the shoulder of a two-lane rural highway for a short time. Under North Carolina law, where on the shoulder may you leave it standing?
A stands fully on the shoulder of a straight rural two-lane highway. The question shows open approaches from both directions and an enlarged car detail, with no visibility distance marked.
Correct answer: Where drivers from both directions can see it from at least 200 feet away, and it does not block traffic
Why
Drivers need time to see a parked car and to move around it, and at highway speeds that time is short. So do not stop just beyond a curve or the top of a hill, where the car stays hidden until drivers are close. The handbook puts the same 200-foot rule in its list of places where you must not park.
