Your car has anti-lock brakes (ABS). On an icy road, the car ahead stops suddenly. You brake hard and feel the brake pedal pulse under your foot. What should you do?
Correct answer: Keep firm, steady pressure on the pedal and let the ABS work.
Why
How you brake on ice depends on your brakes. Without ABS, drivers pump drum brakes or use a slow on-and-off action with disc brakes so that the wheels keep rolling. With ABS, the system does this for you, so keep firm, continuous pressure on the pedal. If you slam on brakes that have no ABS, the wheels lock and the tires skid.
