On a two-lane highway, you come up behind a snowplow at work. It throws sand, and the blowing snow behind it makes a whiteout. What should you do?
A approaches a working snowplow on a snowy two-lane highway. Sand spray and dense blowing snow obscure the roadway behind the plow; both vehicles remain within the same lane.
Correct answer: Stay well back and wait until you can see, because plows often pull over to let traffic pass.
Why
Snowplow drivers cannot see directly behind the truck, and plows may stop, back up, or move sideways in drifts. Keep well back, do not crowd the plow, and never drive into a whiteout from crosswinds or plowing. On a road with more than one lane, the plow may be in any lane or on the shoulder. Most winter crashes happen because drivers go too fast for the conditions.
