You are about to back out of your driveway onto a residential street. Children often play near your home. What should you do before you back up?
A faces into a driveway with its rear toward a residential street. The card states that children often play nearby; no child or hidden obstacle is invented.
Correct answer: Walk around the vehicle to check for clearance, then back out slowly when the way is clear.
Why
The area directly behind a vehicle is hard to see from the driver's seat, and small children can be completely hidden there. North Dakota law lets a driver back only when the move is safe and does not interfere with other traffic, and it does not allow backing on any part of a controlled-access highway. You are responsible for a safe move into the traffic lane, so look over your shoulder as you move and keep your speed low.
