A rear tire goes flat on a two-lane rural highway. The road has a wide, firm shoulder. Where should you stop the car?
A has a visibly deflated rear tire on a straight two-lane rural highway. An enlarged detail shows that tire. A wide, firm shoulder lies to the right beyond the white edge line; it is empty in the question.
Correct answer: With all four wheels off the traveled pavement, on the shoulder
Why
A car that stays partly in a lane can be hit by drivers who do not see it in time, especially at highway speed. North Dakota law also asks for a clear view of a stopped vehicle from 200 feet in each direction, so do not stop just past a hill or curve when you can choose a better place. On a dark highway at night, a stopped vehicle must show a white or amber light to the front and a red light to the rear, visible for 1,000 feet.
