You signal to park in an open space along the right-hand curb of a city street. Where should you stop your car before you start to back into the space?
A signals while approaching an open parallel-parking space between curbside cars B and C. A has not yet pulled even with B, the car ahead of the space.
Correct answer: Even with the vehicle parked ahead of the space, about 2 feet to the side of it.
Why
When you park parallel in North Dakota, your wheels must be parallel to the right-hand curb and not more than 12 inches from it. A correct start makes this possible: signal, stop beside the vehicle ahead, and back slowly with the wheel turned right; when your car is clear of that vehicle, turn the wheel left. Then pull forward to the center of the space and shift into park, and watch for traffic and pedestrians during the whole move.
