You drive at night on a dark rural highway. Oncoming cars keep coming, so you must use your low beams. How should you set your speed?
A drives on a dark rural two-lane road with a short headlight beam lighting the lane ahead. Two cars approach in the opposite lane, and the card identifies A’s lamps as low beams.
Correct answer: Slow down so that you can stop within the distance that your headlights light up.
Why
If your speed is too high for your lights, a hazard comes into view too late for you to stop. This is called overdriving your headlights. Low beams light less road than high beams, so they call for an even lower speed. Watch the taillights of vehicles ahead for signs that they slow down or change lanes, and take extra care at dawn and dusk, when deer are most active.
