You are using high beams on a dark two-lane highway. At what distances must you switch to low beams?
On a dark two-lane road, A follows B while C approaches in the opposite lane. A’s broad high-beam pool reaches toward both other vehicles; no dimming distance appears in the question image.
Correct answer: Within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle, and within 300 feet behind a vehicle you follow.
Why
High beams can blind other drivers, both through their windshield and in their mirrors. If an oncoming driver does not dim, look toward the right edge of your lane until the vehicle passes instead of into the lights. Your eyes need time to recover after glare, so slow down a little until they adjust.
