Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You wait in the intersection to turn left on a green light. An oncoming car is close and coming fast, and there is a large gap in traffic behind it. What should you do?
A waits inside an intersection to turn left on a steady green light. Oncoming car B is close, with open road behind it; the card says B is moving fast.
Correct answer: Let the oncoming car pass, because you must yield to it, then turn in the gap.
Why
Left turns across traffic are dangerous, because drivers misjudge the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles. Motorcycles are a special risk: the manual says that nearly 40 percent of the crashes between a motorcycle and another vehicle happen when the other vehicle turns left in front of the rider. While you wait, also watch for vehicles that pass on the right side of a car that turns left.
