Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive in the right lane of I-94, outside city limits. Ahead, a pickup is stopped on the right shoulder with its hazard lights flashing. Heavy traffic fills the left lane, so you cannot move over safely. What should you do?
A approaches pickup B stopped fully on the Interstate’s right shoulder, with flash cues at its lamps. Closely spaced cars C, D and E occupy the left lane, leaving no safe opening beside A.
Correct answer: Stay in your lane, reduce your speed, and pass the pickup with caution.
Why
People at a stopped vehicle can be close to the traffic lane while they change a tire or wait for help. North Dakota's move-over law applies on the Interstate and on multilane highways outside city limits. It covers stranded vehicles with hazard lights, emergency vehicles, and NDDOT maintenance vehicles with flashing lights. When a lane that is not next to the stopped vehicle is open and safe, move into it.
