On a two-lane highway, an oncoming car drifts across the center line into your lane. What should you do?
On a two-lane highway, oncoming car B faces left and straddles the yellow center lines, entering A’s lane. A faces right, with a clear gravel shoulder beside its lane.
Correct answer: Slow down, flash your headlights, and move right, onto the shoulder or off the road if needed.
Why
A head-on crash is the most deadly type of crash, and the other driver may be asleep, distracted or impaired. Moving right keeps you away from the lane that the other driver will most likely return to. A ditch or shoulder crash at a lower speed is far better than a head-on collision.
