The posted speed limit is 55 mph. Heavy rain has started, and spray from other vehicles cuts how far you can see. What speed should you drive?
A travels in heavy rain behind B while C approaches in the opposite lane. Spray hangs behind the other vehicles, and the card states the posted 55 mph limit.
Correct answer: A speed below 55 mph that is safe for the rain, the spray and the traffic.
Why
A road is very slippery just after rain starts, because the water mixes with oil and dirt on the surface, and deeper water can make your tires hydroplane. A lower speed gives you more time to see hazards and more grip to stop or steer. In North Dakota, a driver who goes too fast for the conditions can be guilty of careless driving, even below the posted limit.
