You drive at highway speed in heavy rain. The steering suddenly feels light, and you sense that the tires are riding on the water. What should you do?
A travels through standing water on a two-lane highway in heavy rain. Its caption says the steering feels light and the tires seem to ride on the water. The question has no route or recovery instruction.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas, stay off the brakes, and hold the wheel straight until the tires grip.
Why
A wet road is very slippery just after rain starts, when water mixes with oil and dirt on the pavement. As the water gets deeper, the tires can ride up on it and lose contact with the road; this is hydroplaning. Slow down in rain before it happens. If it does happen, ease off the gas and avoid hard braking or sharp steering until the tires grip again.
