You are riding a snowmobile and need to cross a two-lane state highway that is not an interstate. How must you cross?
Snowmobile rider A, also shown in a separate enlarged detail, faces across a two-lane highway from the snowy roadside. Car B approaches in the nearer lane, and both directions of the road are visible.
Correct answer: Stop before the shoulder, yield to traffic, and cross at about a right angle.
Why
Drivers do not expect a snowmobile to come out of the ditch, and a snowmobile is hard to see in blowing snow. A straight crossing at a right angle keeps your time on the road short. On a divided highway, cross only at an intersection; off-highway vehicles follow the same crossing rules.
