You drive in the right lane of a four-lane highway and want to move into the left lane. Your mirrors show that the left lane looks empty. What should you do before you move over?
A travels in the right lane of a four-lane, two-way highway and wants the adjacent left lane. That lane is empty in the scene, and the card states that A’s mirrors show no vehicle there.
Correct answer: Signal, look over your left shoulder for a car in your blind spot, then move when it is clear.
Why
A vehicle must stay as nearly as practical within one lane, and the driver who changes lanes is responsible for doing it safely. Motorcycles are small and easy to miss in a quick look, so check with care. Change one lane at a time, keep a safe gap to the vehicle ahead, and cancel your signal when you finish.
