Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive behind a bicyclist on a two-lane road. Oncoming cars are near, so if you pass now, only about 2 feet of space will be between your car and the rider. What should you do?
A follows bicyclist B on a two-lane road while C approaches in the opposite lane. The fact card states that passing now would leave only about two feet beside the rider.
Correct answer: Stay behind the rider until you can pass with at least 3 feet of space.
Why
A bicyclist can swerve to avoid a pothole, loose gravel, or a gust of wind, and a close pass can knock the rider down. The 3-foot distance is only the minimum; the manual asks you to slow down near bicyclists and to pass only when road and traffic conditions make it safe. After the pass, check over your shoulder before you return to your normal lane position.
