Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On a dry road, the car ahead of you passes a road sign. You start to count, and your front bumper reaches the same sign as you say 'one-thousand-and-two.' What does this tell you?
A follows B on a dry two-lane road beside a fixed roadside sign. The card says A reaches the sign two seconds after B passed it.
Correct answer: You are too close, because the basic gap is at least three seconds.
Why
A time gap grows with your speed, so the same count works in town and on the highway. It gives you time to see a sudden stop ahead and to stop safely yourself. Use a fixed mark such as a shadow or a sign, and check the gap again when traffic changes. Slippery roads, a trailer or a large vehicle ahead call for four seconds or more.
