At 65 mph you hear a loud bang, then a thumping sound, and the car pulls hard to the right. What should you do first?
A moves right in its lane on a two-lane highway with a deflated right-front tire. The card states 65 mph, a bang, thumping and a hard pull right; no steering correction or shoulder path is shown.
Correct answer: Grip the wheel, steer straight, and ease off the gas; wait to brake until you have control.
Why
A flat tire or blowout can make you lose control, and a thumping sound is the warning. A blown front tire pulls the car toward the side of the bad tire, and a flat rear tire makes the car sway from side to side. Keep a firm grip, steer straight, let the car slow down, and turn onto the shoulder only when the car is almost stopped.
