At highway speed, your right wheels drop off the edge of the pavement onto a soft gravel shoulder. What is the safest way to recover?
A straddles the pavement edge, with its right wheels on the lower gravel shoulder. A side-view detail shows the drop, and the card states that A was traveling at highway speed.
Correct answer: Grip the wheel, ease off the gas, then steer back gently once you have slowed.
Why
A pavement edge can catch a tire, and a quick jerk of the wheel at speed can send the vehicle across the center line or into a rollover. On the shoulder you still have room to slow down, so use it. After you signal and check for traffic behind you, return at a low speed with a small, smooth steering input.
