You drive in the right-hand lane of a four-lane road. A broken white line separates your lane from the lane on your left. You plan to turn left at the next intersection. What does the broken white line tell you?
A travels north in the right-hand lane of a four-lane, two-way road. A broken white line separates A from the empty northbound lane to its left, while double yellow lines divide opposing traffic. The card states that A plans to turn left farther ahead.
Correct answer: Both lanes carry traffic in your direction, and you may cross it when it is safe.
Why
The color of a line tells you the direction of traffic: white lines divide lanes that go the same way, and yellow lines divide opposite directions. A broken line can be crossed, but the marking does not make the move safe, so check your mirrors and blind spot and signal first. Ohio law requires you to stay within one lane and to leave it only after you make sure that the move is safe (ORC 4511.33).
