Passing target: 75% (30/40)
You drive on a two-lane, two-way road with a 55 mph limit. Double solid yellow lines mark the center. A car ahead of you goes 45 mph, and you see no oncoming traffic. What should you do?
A wide view shows small, equal-size blue car A and silver car B far apart in the same lane of a two-lane road with double solid yellow center lines. Both face right, and the opposite lane is empty. The card states 45 mph and a 55 mph limit. No route or distance is marked.
Correct answer: Stay behind it, because double solid yellow lines prohibit passing from both directions.
Why
Double solid yellow lines tell drivers in both directions to stay to the right of the center line. You may cross them to turn left, for example into a driveway, or to pass a slow-moving vehicle such as a bicycle or a vehicle with the orange slow-moving vehicle emblem, when it is safe. Ohio law allows that pass only when the slow vehicle goes less than half the speed limit, you can pass without exceeding the limit, and you can see enough clear road ahead (ORC 4511.31).
