On a dry road, the car ahead passes a road sign. You start to count "one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two," and your car reaches the sign as you finish the count. What should you do?
A follows B on a dry two-lane road. A’s front reaches a roadside sign; the card says two seconds have elapsed since B passed the same fixed point.
Correct answer: Slow down, then count again until you reach at least four seconds.
Why
To measure your following time, pick a fixed object such as a sign or pole. Start the count when the rear of the car ahead passes it, and stop when your car reaches it. An alert driver needs about 1.5 to 2 seconds just to see a problem and move a foot to the brake, so a two-second gap leaves almost no time to brake. The four-second gap is a minimum for good conditions.
