Passing target: 75% (30/40)
You drive at the posted 70 mph on a freeway when heavy rain starts. Water begins to collect on the road. What should you do about your speed?
A travels in the right lane of a freeway as heavy rain falls and water collects on the pavement. The question card states that A is traveling at the posted 70 mph; no skid or loss of tire grip is shown.
Correct answer: Slow down now, below 70 mph, because wet pavement reduces the grip of the tires
Why
On a wet road the tires grip less, so the car needs a longer distance to stop and can skid in a turn. At high speed the tires can ride up on a layer of water, and then steering and braking do not work well. The speed that is lawful on a dry, clear day can be too fast for the same road in heavy rain.
