Passing target: 75% (30/40)
You drive at 60 mph on a highway with two lanes in each direction. The speed limit is 65 mph, and most traffic moves at 65 mph. You do not plan to turn left soon. Which lane should you use?
A is shown in a separate vehicle and speed inset, outside all lanes. The highway has two lanes in each direction, with C in opposing traffic and no following vehicle. The cards give A’s speed of 60 mph, most traffic at 65 mph, a 65 mph limit and no planned left turn. No travel lane or route is selected.
Correct answer: The right lane, and you move to the left lane only to pass a slower vehicle
Why
When slower cars keep right, faster traffic can pass on the left, where other drivers expect it. A slow car in the left lane makes other drivers weave between lanes and pass on the right, which increases the risk of a crash. The law does not require a slower driver to move right when that move is not safe.
