You drive in the left lane of a four-lane, two-way street. The next corner has a marked crosswalk and no traffic signal. In the right lane beside you, a car stops at the crosswalk as a pedestrian steps off the right curb. What must you do?
A approaches a marked crosswalk in the left lane of a four-lane, two-way street. Car B is stopped in the right lane as pedestrian C steps from the right curb into the crossing; no traffic signal is present.
Correct answer: Stop before the crosswalk and wait until the pedestrian has safely crossed your lane.
Why
Where no traffic signal controls the crossing, Ohio drivers must yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk who is on their half of the road, or who comes so close from the other half that the person is in danger (ORC 4511.46). You may not pass a vehicle that has stopped at a crosswalk to let someone cross, because it can hide the pedestrian from you. Crosswalks exist at intersections even where no lines are painted.
