Passing target: 75% (30/40)
You approach a railroad crossing. No train is in sight, and the crossing signals are dark. Past the tracks, traffic is backed up, and there is room for only half of your car beyond the last rail. What should you do?
A approaches a railroad crossing with dark warning lamps, raised gates and no visible train. Cars B and C are queued beyond the far rail, leaving space for only about half of A behind B.
Correct answer: Stop before the crossing, and wait until your whole car has room past the tracks.
Why
A vehicle that stops on the tracks can be hit by a train that cannot stop in time. Ohio law says you must not drive onto a grade crossing unless your whole vehicle fits on the far side without blocking traffic. This applies even when a signal says go (ORC 4511.712 and 4511.62). While you wait, stop at a point 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail.
