Passing target: 75% (30/40)
On a two-lane highway, you follow a large recreational vehicle (RV). It is so tall and wide that you cannot see the road ahead of it. What following distance should you keep?
A follows a large silver-white recreational motorhome B in the same lane of a two-lane highway. The tall, wide RV stands between A and the road ahead. The card states that it blocks the driver’s view.
Correct answer: Keep more than four seconds, so that you can see farther ahead and stop in time
Why
Four seconds is a minimum for good conditions with a clear view. A large vehicle hides stopped traffic, turns and hazards ahead of it, so you get less warning. Extra space also helps the driver of a large vehicle see you in the side mirrors, and it lets you see farther before you decide to pass. The Ohio manual also calls for more space at night, in bad weather and on slippery roads.
