You drive in the left lane of a city street with two lanes going your way. Ahead, a car in the right lane stops at the crosswalk of an intersection that has no signal. You cannot see why it stopped. What should you do?
A approaches in the left lane of a city street with two lanes in its direction. B is stopped in the right lane at an intersection crosswalk with no signal, and no pedestrian is visible in front of B.
Correct answer: Slow down, be ready to stop, and do not pass it while it waits there
Why
A driver who stops at a crosswalk for no clear reason is often waiting for a person on foot. That person can be hidden by the stopped car and step into your lane just as you arrive. Oklahoma law says that when a vehicle stops at a crosswalk to let a pedestrian cross, a driver who comes from behind must not pass it. The law also requires due care to avoid hitting any pedestrian, with extra care near children and confused people.
