A dog runs into the road ahead of you. Your car keeps moving at the same speed while you see the danger and move your foot to the brake pedal. Which parts of total stopping distance does your car cover before the brakes start to work?
A travels east on a two-lane road as dog B runs north into A’s lane well ahead. The card states that the car keeps moving while the driver sees the danger and moves a foot toward the brake.
Correct answer: The perception and reaction distances
Why
Total stopping distance adds three parts: perception distance, reaction distance and braking distance. Together, perception and reaction take a little more than one second, and the car does not slow down during that time. The manual's chart shows about 110 feet of driver reaction distance at 50 mph before the braking distance even starts. This is why you must look far ahead and keep a large gap to the vehicle in front.
