You drive on a divided highway that is posted at 70 mph. Heavy rain starts, and you can see only a short distance ahead. What speed does Oklahoma's basic speed rule require?
A travels in the right lane of a divided highway during heavy rain. The pavement and lane lines fade into the rain ahead, and the card gives the posted limit of 70 mph and a short visible distance.
Correct answer: A speed below 70 mph that lets you stop within the distance that you can see.
Why
Oklahoma's basic speed rule does not set one number. Your speed must fit the traffic, the road surface, the visibility, the weather and your own ability, and it must let you stop within the clear distance ahead. A driver who hits something that appeared within the visible distance was driving too fast, even below the posted limit. In a heavy downpour, the manual tells you to slow down or pull off the road.
