What is the minimum distance you must stop behind a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing or its stop arm extended?
Yellow westbound school bus B is stopped on an undivided two-way road. Its upper outboard red warning lights flash, its left-side stop arm is extended, and the inboard amber warning lamps are off. Blue A approaches from behind; silver C faces the bus in the opposite lane. The upper-right detail enlarges the actual rear-header lamp positions. There is no numerical distance or answer cue.
Correct answer: 20 metres
Why
When approaching from behind, stop at least 20 metres before a stopped school bus that has its overhead red lights flashing or its stop arm extended. If both warnings are active, the statutory stopping duties continue until the bus moves or both the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm retracts. Before proceeding, make sure children and the road are clear. The 20-metre minimum applies to the rear approach.
