You turn off a downtown street into an alley behind a row of shops. No speed sign is posted in the alley. What is the highest speed that Oregon law allows there?
Correct answer: 15 mph
Why
Alleys are narrow, and people, delivery workers and vehicles can come out of doorways and garages with little warning. Oregon's statutory speeds apply whether a sign is posted or not: 15 mph in alleys and narrow residential areas, 20 mph in business districts and school speed zones, and 25 mph in residential districts and public parks. Even at 15 mph, the basic speed rule still requires a speed that is safe for what you can see.
