On a highway, your gas pedal sticks down, and the car keeps speeding up. You tapped the pedal, but it did not come back up. What should you do next?
A travels in the right highway lane beside a clear paved shoulder. The card states that the gas pedal stays down and the car keeps speeding up after tapping the pedal failed; no route is shown.
Correct answer: Shift to neutral, brake, and steer off the road when you are slow enough.
Why
A stuck gas pedal is frightening, but a planned response keeps you in control. Keep your eyes on the road and try to free the pedal with your foot, not your hand. Turning the ignition to OFF also stops the power, but then steering and braking need more force; never turn the key to LOCK while the car moves. After you stop off the road, put on your emergency flashers.
