It is 20 minutes before sunset on a dark, cloudy afternoon. Traffic is heavy, and you can see other vehicles only about 700 feet ahead. It is not raining, and your wipers are off. What does Pennsylvania law require?
A is among several cars on a darkened two-way road. The card describes a cloudy afternoon 20 minutes before sunset, heavy traffic, visibility of about 700 feet and no wiper use; a separate enlarged detail shows A’s lamps.
Correct answer: Turn on your headlights, because you cannot see vehicles 1,000 feet ahead.
Why
On gray days and in heavy traffic a car can blend into the scene, so headlights help others see you as well as help you see. Many cars light only the front lamps in daytime mode, so switch the headlights on yourself to light the taillights too. The same 1,000-foot rule applies in rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog, smoke or smog.
