You drive at 50 mph in heavy rain. Suddenly the steering feels light, and your car seems to float on the water. What should you do?
A travels over patches of standing water in heavy rain. An enlarged tire detail shows a film of water separating the tire from the road. The card states 50 mph, light steering and a floating sensation; no recovery path appears.
Correct answer: Hold the wheel with both hands and ease off the gas; do not brake hard or turn sharply.
Why
Hydroplaning happens when tires ride on a film of water instead of the road. It can start at speeds as low as 35 mph in only a tenth of an inch of water, and worn tires make it worse. The best defense is to slow down in heavy rain before it starts.
